Where can I buy Jerusalem Balsam?

I am looking for a place to buy Jerusalem Balsam for my father who is terminally ill with cancer.

Where can I buy Jerusalem Balsam?
Perhaps you can contact the people who conducted the following study, which you can read at the National Library of Medicine:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query... (type if Jerusalem Balsam)

The Jerusalem Balsam: from the Franciscan Monastery in the old city of Jerusalem to Martindale 33.Moussaieff A, Fride E, Amar Z, Lev E, Steinberg D, Gallily R, Mechoulam R.

Department of Medicinal Chemistry and Natural Products, School of Pharmacy, Hebrew University, Jerusalem 91120, Israel.

The Jerusalem Balsam, a remedy based on an ethanolic extract of a herbal mixture, was formulated in 1719 in the pharmacy of the Saint Savior monastery in the old city of Jerusalem. Having gained fame, the Jerusalem Balsam was replicated and prepared in Europe. One can still find variations of the formula in current pharmacopoeias (B.P., 1998. The Stationary Office, London, p. 1510; Sweetman, S.C., Blake, P.S., McGlashan, J.M., Parsons, A.V., 2002. Martindale: The Extra Pharmacopeia, 33rd ed. Pharmaceutical Press, London, p. 1101). We report here, five different formulas, all referred to as "The Jerusalem Balsam". Three of those formulas were translated and two of these translations are presented in the text. A third one is available as Supplementary data online. As the formulas originate from different historical periods, the Jerusalem Balsam may be a good case study of the development of pharmaceutical formulations over a 250 years period. One of the formulas, found in a manuscript form in the archive of the monastery, contains four plants: olibanum (Boswellia spp.), myrrh (Commiphora spp.), aloe (Aloe sp.) and mastic (Pistacia lentiscus L.). We conducted pharmacological assays on this four-plant formula. It showed anti-inflammatory, as well as anti-oxidative, and anti-septic properties.

What shampoo and balsam is best for very damaged hair?

Dont go out and buy anything expensive.

First: Purchase a mild Shampoo (To Clarify hair, I will explain why)

Second: TRIM your hair ends (May 1 1/2 to 2 inches)

Third: Here's the magic part: Mix olive oil, almond oil, coconut oil, avocado oil and a "little" honey, (honey u will have to heat so it can blend). Either leave on ALL day or all night (if all nite, DONT use honey)

Repeat this 3-4 times a week, your hair will grow like a weed %26amp; remove all frizz I promise,..... and it will be super shiny!!!!

The clairifying shampoo will help take the oil off your hair when u shower

You can find olive oil anywere, but the other oils you will have to buy at a local organics store, wholes foods or BJ's health corner.

What shampoo and balsam is best for very damaged hair?
Your welcomed!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Report It

Reply:If it is that damaged I would suggest a hair cut and start again.Split ends cannot be repaired so if you have a lot of them, cut them off.
Reply:First you will need a cut/trim to get rid of split ends.

Then when mine was a complete mess last year I used Aussie Hydrating Shampoo and Conditioner when I washed my hair normally and then Aussie's 3 minute miracle conditioner or Dove's Intense repair conditioner a couple of times a week to help it along!

Also stop using styling irons or hairdryers if possible for a while to allow your hair to recover and don't use hair dyes for a while for the same reason. If you do carry on with hair dryers/irons then use a protective serum like Tresemme Heat Protection and Pantene does something similar which works just as well!

If you are going to be out in the sun a lot then try and find a good leave in conditioner which should help prevent further damage!
Reply:Just go to a proffessional hair salon, and ask them.

Most of the time they'll have some sales and stuff.

They should be able to help you out.

There's all kinda of stuff for damaged hair out there.
Reply:Balsam is NOT good for your hair. It's made from a tree. Trees don't do a whole lot of good for our hair. It weakens hair, making it easier to stretch to the breaking point.

I recommend you use Nexus products. They are available in salons. The salon where you buy it can tell which products to use for your hair. These are the best products made.
Reply:you should try suaves shampoo balsam %26amp; protein.
Reply:Head and shoulders do a fantastic range! You dont need to have dandruff to use it. Try the one for dry damaged hair!!! FANTASTIC!!!

How do we obtain balsam?

Balsam is a term used for various pleasantly scented plant products. It is an oily, resinous, and odorous substance, which flows spontaneously or by incision from certain plants. They may be obtained from:Balsam (flower) Impatiens,

Balsam fir Abies balsamea, Balsam poplars Populus, shoots of the Aphernousti pine and Myroxylon and its resin (Tolu balsam or Balsam of Peru) .

How it is obtained:

Oil extraction. Since balsam is highly composed with oil, it can be obtained by distillation process immediately after blossoming while fresh. Macerating the plants for one day before distilling gives good result of obtaining its essential oil.example for this is the True Riga Balsam which is obtained from the shoots of the Aphernousti pine, pinus cembra, previously bruised and macerated for a month in water. It is pellucid, very liquid, whitish, and has the smell and taste of oil of juniper.

Tapping the tree is another way to obtain the balsam. The Tolu balsam or Balsam of Peru is tapped like rubber trees to collect their resin like gums that are used commercially and sold as "balsam." Balsam Fir are also tapped of its resin.

Another simple method is simply by brewing.decoction, or boiling a part of a balsam tree to obtain its balsam, which is usually done for medical purposes either by local application or ingesting the "balsamed water".

How do we obtain balsam?
I believe it comes from a kind of pine tree.
Reply:It comes from an evergreen, perhaps cedar. The kind used to seal mictoscope slides is called Oregon Balsam.

A Lotus is related to water lilies.

The plant I know as Balsam is related to Impatiens and is informally known as Touch Me Not. It is easily grown in the home garden and will self seed freely.

WHY does my cats love to licks balsam ointment...?!?

Hi, I have female cat. Everytime after I get my physical excersice I always use this balsam ointment to my body and my foot. Then one night while I was in deep of sleep, something woke me up! My cat is licking the balsam from it bottle! Licking like she drinks milk!

And until now (its been 4 months) she kept doing that. Following me if I smell of balsam. Licking my foot and my hand where balsam on it. It scary. It's not poison isn't it?

WHY does my cats love to licks balsam ointment...?!?
Maybe they hate the scent or somthing. Try hiding it in a box. Then after 2 months put it back out and see if they still want to lick it. I'm an expert on cats so e-mail me at pwittyfwower2@yahoo.com if you need more help.
Reply:My dog eats chapstick and lipstick and will do almost anything to get at them.

How can I revive my dying Christmas Tree? I have a Balsam Fir.?

You can't revive it, just replace it. Get rid of that dying Christmas tree or you may end up with a fire.

How can I revive my dying Christmas Tree? I have a Balsam Fir.?
When did you buy it?

When did you put it up?

When was it cut?
Reply:There are really no easy solutions. Sap has probably clogged the stump which will keep the tree from getting water. I would call a tree farm and ask what you could add to the water. The stump needs to be trimmed back. Since the tree is decorated I'm guessing. use a turkey baster and suck all the water out of the tree stand and add very hot water to try and dissolve the sap. I water my tree with hot water every couple days.
Reply:Dry trees are a fire hazard. You should probably take it down.

Before you do that, you might want to try phoning your local nursery or wherever you bought the tree and see if they have any suggestions. They may also give you a deal on a replacement as they may be stuck with overstock.

Does Dr. Martens "Wonder Balsam" waterproof the shoe, or should I apply a separate waterproofer?

Does the Wonder Balsam only "condition" the shoe (soften, replace the natural oils, etc), or does it also serve as a waterproofer? If it does waterproof the shoe, is it just as effective as a stand-alone spray-on waterproofer?

In other words, should I treat my various leather dress and casual shoes with...

A) Only the Wonder Balsam

B) Only the spray waterproofer

C) Both

Thanks!

Does Dr. Martens "Wonder Balsam" waterproof the shoe, or should I apply a separate waterproofer?
If you are worried about water proofing you leather than I would also uuse a little of the spray water proofer, but also you Wonder Balsam. Use more of the Balsam that the waterproofer and make sure you apply them after six hours of eachother.

Will tame strawberry plants grow underneath balsam fir trees or similar conifers?

Strawberries require full sun and fast draining soil. Most commercial growers treat them as annuals.

How to plant Balsam Fir trees from seed?

I have some Balsam fir pinecones and would like to plant them. I know nothing of this subject, but would like to try. Any advice would be helpful. When to plant? Start outside or in? Temp? I live in Northwest Indiana and have sandy soil.

How to plant Balsam Fir trees from seed?
Open the cones and the seed will be very fine winged seed. Once you have done this, put them into a ziplock bag and place into the crisper of your refrigerator. You will need to leave them there for a minimum of 90 days to stratify them. I would suggest just leaving them there until spring. About late March or early April, sow them very shallow in a row of your garden or plant bed. I suggest a thin layer of mulch or Canadian peat moss. Make sure that they stay evenly moist-- that is if it doesn't rain, you may need to do some supplemental watering from time to time. Seedlings will come up the first year. You will want to leave them in the bed until the following season then transplant to space them. Fir from seed may take up to 4 or 5 years to get to a 12-15" seedling/ transplant.

Good luck.
Reply:Put the cones in separate paper bags and put them outside somewhere where they will stay dry but will get the cold of the winter. It needs the cold for seed stratification--so they will germinate. Some people say in the refridgerator or freezer but who wants dirty cones in your fridge or freezer all winter when nature provides exactly what the seeds need. The reason you want to keep them dry is to reduce the chance of rotting.

In the spring carefully remove the seeds from the scales of the cones with tweezers if the don't just fall out on their own. Plant them in an area where they can grow to a foot high or so. Then take the best ones and transplant them to where you want them. If you use a transplant solution you'll reduce the chance of root shock.
Reply:you put the seeds in the mud dummy

To get tree sap off clothing try Goof Off (or a product similar to that), or WD40. Spray the product on the stain, rub in, then launder as usual. For a homemade treatment, try using mayonnaise in a similar fashion...Good Luck!=)

One was planted a few years ago and they have since multiplied and grow like weeds through out the spring and summer. They are taking over my garden!

I have balsam plants growing all over my garden and do not know how to get rid of them. Any ideas?
Hey,

Repeated pulling or cutting of the plant before it sets seed can be a successful means of eradication if carried out over several years.

Spraying herbicides during spring is also an efficient treatment.
Reply:just pull them up... the roots are only in the top inch of the soil...

How long to grow a balsam fir [christmas tree]?

Does any one know how long it takes to grow a balsam fir from seed to around 7 foot.

How long to grow a balsam fir [christmas tree]?
I'm wondering how do trees grow in the forest if not from seeds?

Seed Production and Dissemination- Regular seed production probably begins after 20 to 30 years. Cone development has been reported for trees

*(15 years) of age and younger

and only ** (6.6 ft)** tall.

So it would take about 16 +? years to reach 7 feet tall. On an average. Your growing conditions could shorten or lengthen the time.

I had to look this up, not many people are experts in this field.

the link is quite informative.

EDITED:

PS

Growth rate is about 5.2 inches per year based on the figure above
Reply:It depends where its planted, and how well you take care of it. From seed...I would guess up to 15 years. You could cut that in half I bet if you dig one up when its about 2 ft. They aren't grown from seed too often. Your better off buy/digging up seedlings. If balsam fir grows naturally in your area, I'd think about digging one up. Ask the land owners permission of course. If they don't grow in your area, you should probably grow something else.
Reply:I recently watched an episode of this old house. They went out to a Christmas tree farm. Most of the trees were anywhere from 10-15 years old before they were tall enough to be cut for Christmas trees. It also took yearly pruning to get the trees to grow correctly. I would begin with some rooted cuttings before I started with seed. I am assuming you can go out and take some hardwood cuttings now and use some root stimulator, then place in some coarse sand. The germination process might be intensive or have low rates of success.

Is himalayan balsam same as busy lizzie balsam camellia?

I have some seedlings of Busy Lizzie Balsam Camellia which are taller and stronger and have pointed leaves like New Guinea Impatiens than my regular busy lizzies.

I've read that Himalayan Balsam (Impatiens glandulifera) is an invasive plant as it shoots seeds 2 metres away.

Do I have the same thing and should I be worried and eradicate my seedlings before they reach flowering stage?

Is himalayan balsam same as busy lizzie balsam camellia?
No need to worry Busy Lizzie Balsam is not the same as Himalayan Balsam. The Busy Lizzie is known as Balsam or simply "Impatiens". It is commonly cultivated as a garden flower, where, although perennial in frost-free growing conditions, it is often treated as an annual, discarded at the end of the year. The numerous garden cultivars, selected for varying flower colours.

Himalayan Balsam(Impatiens glandulifera) is a large annual plant, native to the Himalaya. It typically grows to 1 to 2 meters high, with a soft green or red-tinged stem, and lanceolate leaves 5–23 cm long. The crushed foliage has a strong musty smell. The flowers are pink, with a hooded shape, 3–4 cm tall and 2 cm broad; the flower shape has been compared to a policeman's helmet, giving rise to the alternative common name "policeman's helmet". Himalayan Balsam is sometimes cultivated for its flowers. It is now widely established in other parts of the world (such as the British Isles and the United States), in some cases becoming an invasive weed. The aggressive seed dispersal, coupled with high nectar production which attracts pollinaters, often allows the Himalayan Balsam to outcompete native plants. In the UK, some local wildlife trusts organise "balsam bashing" events to help control the plant.

However, a recent study (Hejda %26amp; Pyšek, 2006) concludes that in some circumstances, such efforts may cause more harm than good. Destroying riparian stands of Himalayan Balsam can open up the habitat for more aggressive neophytes such as Japanese knotweed and aid in seed dispersal (by dropped seeds sticking to shoes). Riparian habitat is suboptimal for I. glandulifera, and spring or autumn flooding destroys seeds and plants. The research suggests that the optimal way to control the spread of riparian Himalayan Balsam is to decrease eutrophication, thereby permitting the better-adapted local vegetation that gets outgrown by the balsam on watercourses with high nutrient load to rebound naturally. Regarding stands of the plant at forest edges and meadow habitats, they caution that these conclusions do probably not hold true; in such localities, manual destruction is apparently still the best way to stem or slow the expansion of Himalayan Balm.
Reply:I Love these "FLOWERS" and they can invade my garden any time. I would be thrilled if somebody would mail me some of those projecting seeds!! I've tried for years to find some. Report It

Reply:The Himalayan balsam grows into a 5 to 6 foot plant, and the stem is about2 inches thick. It is a weed, and it really does explode its seeds up to 6 feet away. So, if you do by mistake have this weed amongst your busy Lizzie's, you will soon notice that they are growing way too fast.
Reply:They are all much the same, but you could check the variety. The Himalayan and South American variety is known as Myroxylon pereirae. Hope this helps?
