Decorating ideas for stash box?

bought a balsam wood box at a craft store to keep little things in on my lamp table - nail file, chapstick, etc. Besides painting it, how can I decorate it quick and easy? I was wondering about tearing up pieces of bright colored tissue paper and gluing them on, overlapping for interesting colorations. What type of glue would I need to use? Anything special or just ordinary white glue, watered down a little?

how about, decoupage it, put rinestones on it. for your tissue idea u would want to use something called Mod Podge.
Reply:Decoupaging with tissue paper is a great idea, and as the other person mentioned, you can get great results with Mod Podge. They also sell special papers made for decoupage (with pretty objects and patterns) at craft stores. To see an example of a craft box covered with decoupage, check out the following link below.
Reply:Colored tissue will work very well, and can be done with white glue. A couple of suggestions for different effects. If you "paint" the box with a coat of plain glue first (let it dry) to seal it, the colors of the tissue will be brighter than if you just put it on the raw wood. Work in small areas and overlap everything. Don't try to move the paper around once it's wet (it tears easily) and don't dip it into the glue since the dyes will bleed into the glue and it will no longer dry clear. You can layer other things in with the paper too...think feathers, photos, glitter, etc. Experiment with tearing and cutting the paper since they both give different effects. You can keep the colors more true by applying the paper in layers and letting them dry between layers also. After you're happy with final look, add one last coat of white glue over the entire box to seal it, little felt circles on the bottom to protect the table and you're done!
Reply:Yep, Add a little water and glue its a very cheap version of this glue that drys clear it starts with a P i thing.

60% glue 40 % water and mix

also try dipping the paper into the mix yo have it evenly added.

:) hope that works

Reply:Here are a couple of ideas to consider:

1. Using scrapbooking embellishments! Depending on what you plan to use the box for, you can decorate it in matching theme, i.e. using ribbons if you plan the box to store your ribbon stash. There are so many varieties of embellishments to choose from including beads and buttons!

2. Using rubber-stamp/clear-stamps. You can stamp directly on your box, or paint it first, then stamp on it. You can also use embossing powder for a more dimensional look. Combined this with some scrapbooking embellishments or beads/buttons for a more elaborate style.

Here's a sample of what I did with clear-stamps on 'naked' IKEA box: http://ztampf.com/ztampfest/v/ClearStamp...

And here I used stamp + embossing powder on leather, but it would also work on wood:

Hope this help :).
